Pascal is a historically influential imperative and procedural programming language created in 1970 by Niklaus Wirth to promote good programming practices through structured programming and data structuring. Derived versions of Pascal include Object Pascal, developed in 1985 for object-oriented programming. The language was named after Blaise Pascal, the renowned French mathematician and philosopher.

Niklaus Wirth, the creator of Pascal, had previously developed languages like Euler and ALGOL W. Subsequently, he went on to craft languages such as Modula-2 and Oberon. Pascal was initially designed for teaching structured programming to students, becoming a fundamental introductory language in undergraduate courses. This versatile language has been used extensively across research projects, PC games, embedded systems, and more. Modern Pascal compilers are widely adopted today.

Pascal was the primary high-level language used in the development of Apple Lisa and early Mac systems. The original Macintosh operating system parts were manually translated from Pascal into Motorola 68000 assembly language. Prominent applications like TeX by Donald E. Knuth were built using DEC PDP-10 Pascal while Delphi (Object Pascal) powered software like Total Commander. Object Pascal remains prevalent in Windows application development with Free Pascal offering cross-platform capabilities with the Lazarus IDE, appealing to Linux users with its promise of write once, compile anywhere development.
